Hydra is a stunning island that is built on the all around the hill and the harbour. Many of the villas and houses for rent on Hydra have stunning views over the harbour and sea or of the very interesting interior.

The island of Hydra has no motorised vehicles so all heavy lifting is done by donkey.

Small beaches and places to swim can be reached on foot or by water taxi.

The architecture is strictly monitored so that nothing that does not fit in with the overall ambience can be built. A lot of the architecture is Venetian and is either faced with grey stone or painted plaster.

Hydra is home to many artists. This is reflected in the general ambience. It also tells you something about the island’s visual appeal.

There are quite a few galleries on the island as well as shops where works of art can be purchased.

Places of interest

Museum of History and Archives and Public Library
Located near the Harbour Authorities.

This museum houses exhibits from the Balkan Wars as well as the 1st and 2nd World War as well as a picture gallery and displays of heirlooms, souvenirs from the Greek Revolution.
Please note that this is also the public library.

Ecclesiastic and Byzantine Museum

Located at the same site of the Church of the Dormition (Assumption)

This is a small Ecclesiastic and Byzantine Museum, in which are displayed canonicals, relics, oblations and icons from the 18th century.
The Church was destroyed by an earthquake in 1750, but was reconstructed a few years later by Venetian architects. It used to be a Monastery.

If you are in Hydra at the end of June do not miss the Miaoulia festival which is held on the nearest weekend to the 21st June as part of the Nautical Week Celebrations. It celebrates a sea battle fought during the Greek War of Independence.

Admiral Miaoulis was born in Hydra in 1769 and is much admired and respected by the inhabitants of Greece and Hydra in particular.
