Aquitaine

The capital of the region is Bordeaux (think wine). It is divided up into the departments of the Dordogne, Gironde, Landes, Lot-et-Garonne and the Pyrenees-Atlantiques. Wine is the economic mainstay of the area.

Climate
The area benefits from the Gulf Stream making it quite mild. The region has many hours of sun and rainfall distributed evenly throughout the year.

The region is served by the airports of Bordeaux, Pau, Biarritz and Bergerac. It also has a good rail network which includes the TGV Atlantique. The road network is also very comprehensive.

Other major cities in the area are Pau, Bayonne, Mont-de-Marsan, Biarritz, Bergerac and Perigueux.

Places of note in the area include: the Chateau Margaux, the Roque St-Christophe, The Botanic Garden at Bordeaux, the caves of Perigord and the adventure forest at Montalivet.

Truly remarkable discoveries made in 1940 are the prehistoric cave paintings in the Caves of Lascaux. The paintings themselves are not on view as a protective measure. You may view an exact duplication at the site though.

Festivals
If you would like some regional celebrations and festivals, try for example,  the Bordeaux Fete Vin during the last week in June. The fete is held on the banks of the river Garonne in the town’s huge square. You may get a pass called a ‘tasting pass’ means you can taste the wines of the area. There are also various events held throughout the duration. Visit the web site: http://www.bordeaux-fete-le-vin.com/uk/programme/index.html

There is a surfing festival in Biarritz every year at the end of June through the beginning of July. Concerts and art exhibitions are also held at this time.
