Monemvasia, known as the Gibraltar of the east Mediterranean Sea, with its narrow, cobble-stoned alleys, the traditional and historic architecture and the impressive castle that seems like it hangs from the mountain side, is one of the most picturesque cities in the Peloponnese and all of Greece!

Located in the southeastern Peloponnese in the prefecture of Laconia, the city is separated about 400 meters from the mainland by an earthquake in 375 AD.

The city has many things to keep visitors busy and happy. Spend some time walking in the alleys and visit charming shops where you can buy souvenirs, enjoy a lazy afternoon in the many coffee shops, and taste local cuisine at the plethora of excellent restaurants.

An important port city since the 6th century, Movemvasia still looks as if it belongs to the Middle Ages, which is where all its charm lies. The beautiful beaches and clear waters of the Southern Peloponnese give visitors the extra reason to spend their holidays here.

The city is divided into New Monemvasia (Gefira) and Old Monemvasia, which are linked by a causeway. In Old Monemvasia you can visit the impressive castle or Castro, as well as the ruins of the almost 800 houses that were once part of the thriving city-port. Out of the 40 Byzantine churches, only 4 remain intact. Be sure to visit the Church of the Elkomenos Christ (Christ Dragged), named after a famous icon of Christ given in 1700 to the church by Andreas Likinios, philosopher and chief physician to the ruler of Moldavia, Dimitirs Kandimir. St. Paul’s church, built in 956, is the oldest and houses Monemvasia’s museum. You can also visit the church of Our Lady of Hrisafittisa, which was built in the 16th century.

The Venetian influence is extraordinarily evident in every corner of Monemvasia – from the cobble-stoned alleys, the decorations of the houses, and even in the chimney details, which were all built facing the east so that balconies face the West and the sea.

Walking through the old town you will eventually find the hill that will lead you to the castle. Take a few minutes to enjoy the view from Agias Sophia’s church (built in 1287-1328), which is the steepest location on the mountainous rock. From the church you can gaze at the unique and spectacular view down the old city, surrounded by the castle walls that look like they could slip into the sea…When visiting the Castle, keep in mind to be well-prepared for it. You should wear sports shoes and always have a bottle of water with you, especially during the hot summer months. Access to the castle may not be easy, especially for people with disabilities.

The coastal “new” town of Monemvasia (Gefira) has been created over the years and links Old Monemvasia to the Peloponnese with a bridge (which is what Gefira means in Greek). In New Monemvasia you will find a well-built modern tourism infrastructure. Enjoy your meals at sea-front restaurants that look out towards the Aegean Sea, traditional restaurants serving classic Greek cuisine and local bars. Bus routes from Gefira to the Castle are daily and frequent.

The area has many lovely beaches such as Gefiras and Pori, Ampelakia, Xifia and Kastellas. You can also swim under the shadow of the Castle at Portello, which is a narrow and rocky opening to the sea, cushioned by the castle walls…

The area around Monemvasia is ideal for alternative tourism activities, such as cave hikes (Kastoria being the most impressive and spectacular cave to visit.) You can also visit Cape Maleas, where a petrified forest with trees more than a million years old still stands. An excursion to Cape Maleas is a half day’s excursion. Organized sailing and horse riding are also available to you, as well as wine tasting, for the area is known for.

If you’re looking to take a small day-trip, you can also visit the Elafonissos Island to swim in the unforgettable “golden” Simou beach, one of the few white sand beaches in all of Greece. It’s approximately 35 km from the new town of Monemvasia.
