Large Patmian Villa in Chora (ref: 45961)

Large Patmian Villa in Chora

The villa is situated in Chora, one of the most picturesque villages of the Aegean islands and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The villa is located on a quiet little street in a tranquil setting.

The house was built in 1595 and it is one of the oldest and most historical in Chora. It is a heritage house that has passed from mother to daughter for centuries, along with the furniture and the decorative pieces.

The two storey residence is built on two floors and offers modern facilities.

The large upper yard has a beautiful view of the sea and sunset. Under the pergola is a comfortable area with seating and dining facilities. As you enter the house on the upper level you will see a large space which is an example of the Patmian ‘sala’’ decorated and furnished with heritage antiques. The main house has two entrances that lead to a beautiful Patmian patio and yard with arches and gardens. Entering the house from the external patio, visitors meet a comfortable space that serves as an indoor sitting and dining area. Next to the dining area, you will find the wonderful kitchen decorated in authentic Patmian style and offering all modern amenities. The kitchen is comfortably situated next to the patio for easy access to all the areas on the ground floor.

The master bedroom and one additional bedroom are located at the upper level, while a third and fourth bedroom are situated on the ground floor. The upstairs level consists of the master bedroom which is connected to a large area with seating on the upper level. Another bedroom with a separate entrance is also is also located upstairs and has a wooden, hand curved, single bed. An outdoor bathroom is available on this upper floor.

The level downstairs consists of two bedrooms with double beds, a sitting room, a kitchen with a comfortable dinnng area and an indoor bathroom.

The traditional Patmian patio at the ground floor is on four different different levels, in an entirely private area offering relaxation and tranquillity. This main outdoor area of the villa is the ideal setting and is connected by an external stairway to a magnificent veranda with sea and sunset views.

Staying in such a wonderful villa amongst traditionally paved narrow streets and white-washed alleys is a stunning experience.

Patmos is famous for being the location where St. John wrote the Book of Revelations after communing with God in a cave. This cave can still be visited and is on the track between Chora and Skala. The name Chora is used on most of the Greek islands for the main town while Skala is usually the name of the harbour town. The island is dominated by the monastery of St. John which is visible from the port town of Skala. The island has a wonderful landscape with rocky formations that form strange shapes and wonderful flora which creates amazing colours when the sun is going down. It is a fascinating place to explore on foot although there is a bus service and cars and bikes can be hired. A group of water fowl have made their home around the beach at Skala and often cross the road in front of it in a disorderly group so please drive carefully! The island had lots of little beaches, some with waterside tavernas where you can relax and wonder over to look at donkeys. You can visit the nearby islands or the more remote beaches of Patmos by boat. The monastery of St. John of course is a must to visit with its library and wonderful relics. At the top of the island there is also a windmill from where you can view the monastery and other parts of the island. The towns of Chora and Skala have narrow cobbled streets with shutters of various hues which are crying out to be photographed. Water sports such as windsurfing, water skiing and canoeing are on offer on Patmos. The island combines everything you could wish for on a Greek island, history, wonderful nature, traditions and lovely little beaches. Do not miss it!

Patmos can be reached by ferry from Athens' port, Piraeus, every day. The journey takes from 7 to 10 hours. Ferries are large with comfortable sleeping cabins. The return to Piraeus is normally overnight.

An alternative route to Patmos is by air to the Dodecanese islands of Samos or Kos (international charter airports) followed by hydrofoil to Patmos, which takes an hour and a half.
