Hotel with pool, Gialos beach, Ios

Family Accommodation Catering to Your Needs.

Ios or Nios -as it is called by the locals- is a very beautiful and picturesque Greek Island with excellent sandy beaches and hundreds chapels. Its pretty capital, is a dazzling mix of white washed houses and blue domed churches.

Ios Island is well know for its nightlife and is a mecca to the young. If you can sleep to te beat of the disco, Ios is an island for you.

But equally it is an island for walking and relaxing.

According to Herodotus, Ios was the home of Homer mother Clymene, and the burial place for Homer. On 15th of May each year, the Homer festival -Homeria takes place in Ios Island and a flame is carried from the port to his tomb in Plakoto.

There are many good beaches on Ios. Yialos is located at a few minutes walk from the port of Ormos, at the end of the road which follows the bay of Yialos. It is a very popular beach, but still less crowded than Mylopotas. Its fine white sand and crystal-clear waters are really enjoyable.

The beach is surrounded by restaurants, cafes and mini markets. Yialos beach also offers water sports facilities and a nice beach bar.

Most of the island is uninhabited. Hora, the main town, is built on a hilltop, capped by a windmill. There are 12 windmills above the town. Palm trees flank the edges and there's a long marble stairway from the port. Hora is practically a dazzling mix of white houses and blue-domed churches. It's also full of narrow cobbled streets, designed to protect the inhabitants from the wind.

The town of Pano Kambos can be reached by leaving behind the tarmac road and take the relatively drivable track. This will lead you to some Hellenistic ruins which are supposed to be Homer's tomb. There are seven islands that claim to be the hometown of Homer, but the ruins are lovely even if they may not be what they claim to be.

Near Agia Theodoti beach which is surprisingly quiet, you will find the remains of the Byzantine fort of Paleokastro.

The Archaeological museum in the Amoiradakeio Mansion exhibits findings from the excavations that have taken place on the island.

But Ios is most famous for its night-life and the socializing. If that is what you are seeking this is the perfect island. If you want something quieter you will find this on Ios but you will also find yourself amongst lively people having fun on the beach and in the town.
